I graduated from college on Friday. The weather was a delight and afterwards I celebrated with pizza and family. When I crossed the stage I heard only the quiet of the moment, and my heart felt still. Amongst the change I feel an anchor in my chest and I feel a great anticipation for the rest of my life. To all of you graduates of Simmons and of beyond, I love You. You are going to be so great.

I wanted to share a little snippet of some sights we’ve been seeing lately. I’m completely smitten with all that resides on the North Shore, and we head that way most weekends as of late. A gem of a spot is Lynch Park, in Chris’ hometown. Thanks to that guy for owning and iPhone and letting me Instagram all the day long. He is patient and just so darn easy on the eyes.

Last weekend we drove up the coast to Rockport. Man does that place have my heart. I bought a summer hat and ate a clam roll. It feels like summer has truly set in, I hope she stays a long while. Be good, be well. Go outside.

Jackie and Mike

I had the absolute pleasure of shooting engagement photos of Jackie and Mike last Friday in the Boston Public Gardens. The two of them make such a great pair. Plus they’re just gosh darn all around good folks. I’m a little sad they’re moving out of the area for my own selfish sake, but so glad we could preserve these timeless photos in a such a lovely part of Boston before they go!

Weekend Away

Chris and I went away a couple weekends back to quaint little Portsmouth, NH. It was so darn lovely I’m thinking we might move there. On our first afternoon there the sun was out and we sat in the town square with iced coffees and I felt totally completely at home, and happy. We ate some great food and drank even greater beers. We stayed in a really fabulous inn called the Ale House Inn, which as it’s name suggests, was once a brewery house. We highly recommend it–gorgeous linens and decor for me, a Smuttynose stocked fridge for Chris, bikes for two. But here is a peak of what we saw.

The inn keeps an Ipad in every room, which was wonderful for yelping the location of our next meal!

We even drank beers in bed! So bad!

We had such a nice time just strolling about and popping into shops here and there. I can’t wait to go back.

Orange Scented Olive Oil Cake with Orange Compote and Ganache

This recipe called for blood oranges, but I bought “pink” ones. Did you even know that is a type? They’re adorable, sweet, yet a tiny bit tart, and pink. I let this compote sit for a few hours, until the honey had permeated the matchstick peels and soft sections of fruit. It was truly divine, especially when paired with the ganache, and the under notes of rich olive oil.

Thank you, Martha.

long time no see

Going to school, working my part-time job, and having an internship all adds up to about a full time job. Soon I hope I’ll just have one of those things, just a full-time job. For now I’m busy and in the still moments staying pretty darn still. But know that we’re eating good things and seeing good things. Here is what we’ve seen and tasted as of late:

On some Sunday night I made Lentil Meatballs and they were awesome. They were even better the next day as a “meat” ball sub.

Valentine’s Day came and went. Chris bought me some pretty flowers, we went and saw his niece on her first birthday at the aquarium, then had sushi at a neighborhood place. We also bought each other almost identical cards, you know the one’s with the two little kids kissing on the front. Yeah, adorable. I like this guy.

On Mardi Gras, I made spiced shrimp in a delicious red sauce over rice. On the side I made some kale to stand in for the traditional collard green. I also made banana foster for dessert. I didn’t get a picture of the flame and regret that very much. But nevertheless, Chris was really impressed by it all.

We’re having a low key weekend now. Just quiet times with Chris filled with music and french pressed coffee. I saw an old friend today, and I’m feeling a little nostalgic hiccup in my heart. Hoping the next few weeks don’t pass by too fast. Although I’m thrilled about the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, I’m not really in a rush to get anywhere. Tomorrow I’m going to bake a cake and make a sunday night chicken dinner. Will report back. xo

2012

In 2010 I learned what it was like to truly love ones own self. I kissed Chris for the first time an hour or so into 2011. The next morning cleaning up the party I found a gold button that had fallen from his green blazer and sent him a little note telling him to come by so I could sew it back on. The button is still loose, but we’re still together and still kissing all the time. This New Year we spent the night in his hometown on the North Shore of Boston and on New Year’s day I ate a reuben sandwich and we went for a walk right before the sunset in Lynch Park. This place is pretty magical, with a couple of marble lions guarding over a rose garden. The backdrop is the rocky coast, which we stared over until the day was dark.

2012 is bound to bring us each many gifts and adventures. I graduate from college this year and my hopes for the new year is only that we both settle into happiness. Be that here or there, when and how. May you and yours be happy and well. I love you.

christmas in maryland

My apologies for such a long intermission between posts. I’ve been off gallivanting around the east coast eating wonderful things and seeing wonderful people.

Chris and I had our own mini christmas before I left Boston for the holiday. We had a darling Charlie Brown christmas tree and as you may note a very faux fireplace.

As quickly as I found myself in my parents kitchen I was on my sixth dozen batch of chocolate chip cookies. I also made two everyday chocolate cakes. One for our parish priest and one that stuck so badly to the pan that we kept it and ate it for dessert and maybe for breakfast the next day. I also made chocolate walnut biscotti to give as a sweet gift to friends of the family. It was a wonderful time spent, as is any spent in that blue and yellow kitchen. The excessive chocolate theme is due to a 72 ounce bag of chocolate chips my mom wanted to make good use of, but who is complaining?

My parents’ house is my favorite place at Christmas time. There is good smells and good feelings all about. My dad made a prime roast beef for Christmas dinner and I followed it up with a chocolate pavlova for the dessert. Everything was just lovely.

It is always difficult to transition back into the day to day after Christmas. I am just looking forward to the next time I can be home again.

Weekly Meal Plan

Nothing is more important to my well-being than relying on my weekly meal plan. I learned it from Maddie, my older sister, keeps a small moleskine notebook filled with handwritten weekly meal plans, recipes, and doodles. Mine is less organized, scattered on different notebooks and google documents, but I still keep to it the way she does.

Making a weekly meal plan commits myself to a healthy dinner on the table each night of the week. I make my grocery list according to it, which saves money and time. At the store, it is easy to stay to the plan and not get too distracted by ”bakery fresh” mint meringues. Having the ingredients on hand and knowing that on Tuesday we’ll eat Winter pasta with kale keeps the stress at bay. Right now I’m at the tail end of the Fall semester, and I will have to rely on my meal plan to carry me through this week. If I didn’t use my meal plan I’d eat popcorn for dinner.

I’m off to make Couscous Vegetable soup, but this Public Service Announcement felt very necessary. Good luck on all of your Christmas prep, and finals, if you’ve got those too! (Prints by talented Etsy artist, Lucile. I want one of these happy watercolors in my kitchen!)
